The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has revealed that over 40 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak of the deadly viral disease, Lassa Fever in Nigeria. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja today, Adewole said the viral disease which is spread by infected rodents, has spread to ten states in the last six weeks when the first case was reported in November.

“In the last six weeks Nigeria has been experiencing Lassa fever outbreak which so far has affected 10 states in the country. The states affected include Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo state. The total number so far reported is 86 and 40 deaths with the mortality rate of 45%. Our laboratories have confirmed 22 cases so far, indicative of a new round trip of Lassa fever outbreak,” he said.

Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo recaptured in Mexico after gunfight

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the world's most sought-after drug lords, has been captured in his Sinaloa hometown.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Friday.
"Mission accomplished!" the president said via his Twitter account.

He was captured again today at 4:30am in a firefight between his bodyguards and Mexican Marine special forces in the Sinaloa city of Los Mochis, on the Pacific coast and not far from his home, government officials said. Five of his associates were killed, six injured and several captured, the navy said. One marine was wounded.

The special forces were responding to a citizen’s tip regarding armed people in a home when they came under fire, the navy said.

Guzman -- a multi-billionaire thanks to his Sinaloa Cartel, which traffics in cocaine and marijuana -- escaped from jail in July for the second time, dramatically tunneling his way out of Mexico's top maximum-security prison.

Guzman’s escape last year was a major embarrassment for the Peña Nieto government, exposing deep levels of corruption and an inability to mete out justice.

The U.S. government lamented Mexico’s refusal to extradite Guzman to the U.S., where he has been indicted in California and elsewhere because of his cartel’s expanding operations. It is likely that Washington will now revive extradition requests.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Lowell, Massachusetts …
LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has threatened to cancel over 700 million pounds ($1 billion) of planned investments in golf courses in Scotland if Britain slaps him with a travel ban.
The threat from Trump, owner of two golf courses in his mother's homeland of Scotland, comes as British lawmakers prepare to hold a debate on a petition signed by over half a million people calling for him to be barred from the country after his proposal to stop Muslims entering the United States.
The debate will be held on Jan. 18 but will not be followed by a vote. Only interior minister Theresa May can issue an order banning entry into Britain and Prime Minister David Cameron has said he does not favor barring Trump.
The Trump Organization said in a statement that a ban would result in him pulling developments worth 500 million pounds at a golf complex in northeastern Scotland, and a 200 million pound revamp at a resort in the country's southwest.
"Any action to restrict travel would force The Trump Organization to immediately end these and all future investments we are currently contemplating in the United Kingdom," the group said in a statement.
Trump's comments on banning Muslims from entering the United States in December prompted international outrage and led to him being stripped of two Scottish honorary positions.
The proud, half-Scottish billionaire's once-harmonious relationship with Scotland was soured further when he was blocked by a top court in his bid to stop a wind farm being built near his Trump International Golf Links course in Aberdeen.-link

Janet Jackson Denies Cancer Rumors

Janet Jackson said she doesn’t have cancer, but she isn’t specifying the illness that interfered with a concert tour.
On her Twitter account Wednesday, Jackson posted a two-minute clip from her song “The Great Forever,” followed by a personal message in which she said she’s recovering but offered no further details. She said her doctors have approved her concerts as scheduled in Europe.
“The rumors are untrue. I do not have cancer. I’m recovering,” she posted, an apparent response to online reports that she was suffering from throat cancer.
Her announcement came less than two weeks after Jackson said she was postponing her “Unbreakable” tour to have an unspecified surgical procedure. Jackson had been next scheduled to perform Saturday in Denver. She’s scheduled to perform in Europe in March.
Her “Unbreakable” tour has been in the Top 20 global concert tour listing compiled by Pollstar.
Jackson is a member of one of pop music’s royal families, sister of the late Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. Her 1986 album “Control” made her a music star in her own right, a disc that spawned hits like “What Have You Done For Me Lately” and “Nasty.”
The singer built a steadily successful career with hits like “If,” “All For You” and “That’s the Way Love Goes.” Last year she released the album “Unbreakable,” her first new disc since 2008.
She was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year for the first time, but she was not elected.-link

Janet Jackson denies Cancer rumore

There are indications that the Hip-Hop star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and his Babymama, Sophia Momodu,  are already working with the National Agency for the Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons, NAPTIP,  in order to resolve the feud over the custody of their baby, Imade.

A source from the agency told Vanguard, yesterday, that the warring parties are cooperating with the agency to end the face-off as soon as possible.
This is coming on the heels of the 23-year-old pop singer’s visit to the Lagos State office of NAPTIP, yesterday. His father, Dr. Deji Adeleke was said to have stormed the NAPTIP office earlier in the week. So also were Dele Momodu and Sophia.
Though the details of Davido’s meeting with the officials of the agency are yet to be ascertained, it was, however, gathered that the pop star arrived the office of NAPTIP at 11:07a.m., yesterday.
When contacted on the telephone, Davido, who was recently hospitalised due to stress, declined to comment on the outcome of his visit to the NAPTIP office, insisting that it was a family affair and a personal problem.
However, speaking on a condition of anonymity, a source from the NAPTIP office, told Vanguard, yesterday, that the agency is still investigating the matter.
“I cannot tell you the outcome of the meeting because the agency is still investigating the matter and the parties involved are cooperating with us. We are talking about the future of a child here, and everything has to be done to protect the child,” the source said.
It will be recalled that Sophia, through her lawyers, yesterday, requested the original copy of the alleged medical report that Davido published during the week from Clina Lancet laboratory.

The singer had alleged that a pathology test was conducted, in which it was determined that his daughter, Imade, was fed with breast milk contaminated with cannabis.
Meanwhile, in a series of tweets, Monday, Sophia, who is also a relation of the publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, challenged both Davido and his family to publish the alleged medical report, stating that she took cannabis which had infected her seven-month old baby.
Davido, last Sunday, rebuffed claims by his estranged lover, Sophia Momodu on the circumstances surrounding the removal of their daughter, Imade, from Sophia’s custody.
In a statement released, yesterday,  by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, the body urged the parties to sheathe their swords and use constructive and private means to find lasting resolution so as to respect and edify the constitutional dignity and fundamental human rights of the little baby.

“We have observed with considerable trepidation and disappointment the media brickbats and unnecessary spat between the highly successful celebrity musical performer known by his stage name of Davido and the high profile publisher and respected columnist/political activist, Chief Dele Momodu, over a child’s custody disagreement involving the musician; his erstwhile female companion, Ms Sophie, who is reportedly the cousin to Dele Momodu over a child, little baby of seven months, called Imade.”
